How to install Exchange 2013 on Windows 2012 Server -Part 1

What should you check before begin to installation?

  • You must have at least Windows 2003 Forest Level.
  • If you are going to enable DAG (Database Availability Group), you should have one of these servers, Windows 2012 Standard edition, Windows 2012 Datacentre Edition or Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Enterprise edition
  • Any Exchange 2013 role can be installed on to Full installation of Windows 2012 and Windows 2008 R2 SP1

I have Full Windows 2012 Standard Edition Server installed and we are ready to install Exchange 2013.

Your Active Directory must be prepared for Exchange 2013 and these two software below will be used to prepare AD. These applications are included with Windows 2012 that means you don’t need to install separately.

Let’s begin to installation

Open Power shell (Run As Administrator)on windows Server which Exchange 2013 will be installed and install Remote Tools Administration Pack

  • Install-WindowsFeature RSAT-ADDS

Exchange 2013 has two roles, Client Access and Mailbox. Hub Transport role which used before for Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 is no longer available. This role divided two part and each part embedded into Client Access (Front End Transport Service) and Mailbox Role.

I am going to install both roles on my server and I need my server prepared to installation. Copy this command below and paste it to your power shell session.

Install-WindowsFeature AS-HTTP-Activation, Desktop-Experience, NET-Framework-45-Features, RPC-over-HTTP-proxy, RSAT-Clustering, RSAT-Clustering-CmdInterface, RSAT-Clustering-Mgmt, RSAT-Clustering-PowerShell, Web-Mgmt-Console, WAS-Process-Model, Web-Asp-Net45, Web-Basic-Auth, Web-Client-Auth, Web-Digest-Auth, Web-Dir-Browsing, Web-Dyn-Compression, Web-Http-Errors, Web-Http-Logging, Web-Http-Redirect, Web-Http-Tracing, Web-ISAPI-Ext, Web-ISAPI-Filter, Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console, Web-Metabase, Web-Mgmt-Console, Web-Mgmt-Service, Web-Net-Ext45, Web-Request-Monitor, Web-Server, Web-Stat-Compression, Web-Static-Content, Web-Windows-Auth, Web-WMI, Windows-Identity-Foundation

If you are going to install only Client Access Role, this is your command.

Install-WindowsFeature AS-HTTP-Activation, Desktop-Experience, NET-Framework-45-Features, RPC-over-HTTP-proxy, RSAT-Clustering, RSAT-Clustering-CmdInterface, RSAT-Clustering-Mgmt, RSAT-Clustering-PowerShell, Web-Mgmt-Console, WAS-Process-Model, Web-Asp-Net45, Web-Basic-Auth, Web-Client-Auth, Web-Digest-Auth, Web-Dir-Browsing, Web-Dyn-Compression, Web-Http-Errors, Web-Http-Logging, Web-Http-Redirect, Web-Http-Tracing, Web-ISAPI-Ext, Web-ISAPI-Filter, Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console, Web-Metabase, Web-Mgmt-Console, Web-Mgmt-Service, Web-Net-Ext45, Web-Request-Monitor, Web-Server, Web-Stat-Compression, Web-Static-Content, Web-Windows-Auth, Web-WMI, Windows-Identity-Foundation

When the installation of features is finished, reboot the server and then install these three applications in order shown

  1. Microsoft Unified Communications Managed API 4.0, Core Runtime 64-bit
  2. Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Pack 64 bit
  3. Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Pack SP1 64 bit
